2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Reception

The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a distinct vision.

Ismailer noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a renewed approach, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Recruitment

This announcement echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the entire text from the president's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented designers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to consideration and reimagined the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our players.

Our confidence in this project grows every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.

His management and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having devoted the recent years creating and leading some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming Ben next week. We are all excited to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.

David

Experience of the New Leader

The appointee currently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Vision

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Face the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that evolve every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and trust your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is in your hands."

Project Ethos does not have an confirmed debut schedule or platforms, but fans can anticipate additional details as production progresses.
