Champions League Matches Tonight: Chelsea v Barcelona & Additional Games

Greetings to another evening of exciting Champions League football. Nine games are planned for tonight, featuring three British clubs in play. The Blues meet Barcelona in the standout fixture of the evening, while Newcastle visit Marseille and City welcome Leverkusen.

Current Standings

We're at the halfway stage of the group stage, so the standings is taking form. All six English teams are currently in the upper twelve, however there are only two pts between fifth and sixteenth position, thus there's a sense of volatility about the entire situation. All remains open.

  • Ajax 0-1 Benfica (17:45)
  • Union SG and Galatasaray level at 0-0 (17:45)

Historical Context

The only previous meeting involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semi-final of 2003-04, claimed by an emerging star from Côte d'Ivoire. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have a notable history.

Initial Game Reports

Just one goal in the first half of the two early games. Dahl's sixth-minute goal has given Benfica under Mourinho a 1-0 advantage away to the Dutch side.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Although Newcastle arrived in the south of France coming off their restorative two-one home Premier League win over City on Saturday, and having beaten Union SG, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the European Cup, their sole away victory since the start of April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.

Not that Eddie Howe was eager to talk about the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The Champions League is different to domestic games,” said the coach, whose side are 6th in the Champions League standings, with nine pts from a possible 12 and automatic progression to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I am not sure if you can draw parallels between them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Scott Murray, the MBM equivalent of Maradona is on duty for that.
