Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
