Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early names in the frame to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's ten-game without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have historic links to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would create a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a leading contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they start the process of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work meaning the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
