Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no official statement on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos bought its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise reflects the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed over $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
